System Information
Welcome. Glad you could stop by. Let me give you the quick
description, then you can browse around and see the other
details.
The GCRCnet is connected to the world by way of the UNC
main campus Academic Technology and Networks department.
This connection is provided by the campus fiber optic backbone
to the School of Medicine. The SOM is one of just a few
major nodes on the Campus. The School then branches out
to 49 departments and centers to service some 11,000 networked
devices.
The GCRCnet is composed of 3 sun servers, 40 PCs, a lonely
Mac, and 8 networked printers. We are the great integrator
of the available technology here in the Informatics Core,
better know as 'Info R Us'. Our intent is to be a comprehensive
one stop shop for our investigators to find usable solutions
to problems. Anything that is information / computer related.
We provide support and direction primarily to data management,
but also spend a lot of time helping with regard to about
25 normal software applications.
We also provide a service to the rest of the 75 or so GCRCs.
Our biggest contribution is in the form of a list server.
There are 30 different lists that we maintain. Our ftp service
is used as a single point of access for the software distributed
by the NIH/NCRR. We have a web area dedicated to supporting
the other centers. Finally, we are dedicated to improving
the capabilities of the centers, and are taking leadership
roles in the AGSM in order to facilitate this.
Thanks again for stopping by. Look around and
send me a note if you have questions.
